Got the Shudder? Don't Buy the BlueV8 AFM/DFM Disabler Yet.

A truck that shudders at light cruise has one of two very different problems โ€” and only one of them is our department.

  • You have a 2015โ€“19-era 8-speed and the fluid's never been exchanged โ€” GM documented a fluid-caused shudder there, and that conversation comes first
  • The shudder survives the M5 test below โ€” then it isn't AFM, and no plug will help
  • You're hoping a plug will heal a converter that's already damaged โ€” it can't

Shudder #1: the fluid one โ€” GM documented it

On the 8L45/8L90 8-speed automatics, GM issued TSB 18-NA-355 for torque-converter-clutch (TCC) shudder: the culprit is moisture-absorbing transmission fluid, the fix is exchanging it for the new Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP โ€” and if the flush doesn't do it, the converter itself may be glazed. The affected applications span 2015โ€“2019 vehicles, Silverado and Sierra among them โ€” GM's TechLink writeup has the full list.

Now the twist that makes this our business. Per GM's explanation as recounted by forum members, the converter clutch runs a little built-in slip in V4 mode to mask four-cylinder vibration โ€” and the moisture-spoiled fluid shudders worst exactly there. Translation: bad fluid shows up loudest in V4. Which means keeping the truck out of V4 โ€” with M5, or with our plug โ€” can make a fluid problem feel gone while it's still sitting in the pan. That's the whole reason this article exists.

Shudder #2: the transition feel

The V4โ†”V8 swap itself: a small bump or hesitation at light throttle, classically right as the truck debates modes at the bottom of a grade โ€” one owner reckons a disabler cleared about 80% of his weird shudders. This is the kind a disabler genuinely addresses, for the least mysterious reason imaginable: no swaps, no swap-feel.

The free 5-minute test

Reproduce the shudder on a familiar stretch. Then run the same stretch in M5, which holds the truck in V8 with zero hardware โ€” full how-to in our M5 tutorial. Owners on both sides of the disabler debate suggest exactly this test.

Shudder still there in M5? It is not AFM. That's fluid-and-converter territory โ€” save the disabler money for the shop.

Shudder gone in M5? AFM is involved โ€” but remember the twist: on an 8-speed, "gone in V8" can also mean "masked fluid problem." If you're in the TSB population on original fluid, sort the fluid first, then re-run the test on whatever's left.

The details

The AFM-deleted Corvette that still shuddered

The receipt that settles the "just disable AFM" argument: a C7 owner with a full mechanical AFM delete โ€” cam and lifters, about 20,000 miles on the conversion โ€” still got the shudder; the triple fluid flush is what fixed it. The same poster calls disablers a band-aid for this failure mode and warns that waiting can mean the converter damage is already done. What the flush is, what it costs, and its fine print

The GM procedure is a fluid exchange to the new blue-label Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP. Real-world fine print from owners: one saw the shudder return around three years/35,000 miles later and a second flush fixed it again; another was told the service wasn't warranty and paid about CA$1,200 โ€” so ask your dealer about coverage before assuming either way. And a new converter alone isn't a magic ending either: one Silverado shuddered on after a warranty converter swap.

Does AFM cycling damage converters long-term?

Owners speculate exactly that โ€” threads attribute possible converter damage to the constant V8/V4 switching โ€” but it's owner theory. GM hasn't said it, and the documented culprit in the TSB era is moisture in the fluid. The scary version would sell more plugs. We're not writing the scary version.

The disabler made my shudder disappear. Am I done?

Maybe. Outside the 8-speed TSB population, probably โ€” you were feeling transitions. But if you're a 2015โ€“19 8-speed on original fluid, treat the silence as symptom relief, not a clean bill: GM's stated mechanism has bad fluid shuddering worst in V4, so have the fluid conversation anyway. Cheap insurance against an expensive converter.

Which fluid do I ask the shop for?

The one in GM's own procedure: Mobil 1 Synthetic LV ATF HP โ€” the blue-label bottle. We don't sell it, install it, or profit from it, which is exactly why you can trust us on this one.

My truck is a 6-speed. Does any of this apply?

The documented fluid TSB is an 8-speed story. But the M5 test works the same for you: shudder persists in M5 โ†’ not AFM, get it diagnosed; shudder vanishes โ†’ it's the transitions, and then a disabler (or M5 forever) is honestly on the table.

If โ€” and only if โ€” your shudder passed the test

Fluid sorted (or not applicable), and the shudder vanishes when you hold V8? Then what you're feeling is the transitions, and removing them is the one thing our plug actually does: V8 all the time, nothing reflashed, unplugs back to stock, and it'll cost you about 1 MPG by GM's own estimate.
